Amanda’s Story
Hello!
One Rhinebeck that works for everyone.
One Rhinebeck that works for everyone.
I grew up far from Rhinebeck and its picturesque community. I’m originally from Gibson, a working-class neighborhood on the south shore of Long Island. I am the youngest daughter of a Jewish dad and Black mom. I take pride in my roots, but not everyone always has. My neighbors in Gibson actually started a petition to keep my family out because they thought my mom would "lower the property values." My mom worked two jobs and eventually saved enough money to move us to a “better” neighborhood.
Shaped by the values and grit instilled in me by my family and these early experiences, I’ve always refused to accept the status quo. I’ve spent my life kicking down doors that others intended to stay shut. In high school, I became the first female varsity kicker in the school’s history and the third in Long Island’s history. I was a first-generation college student who attended Duke University, and then law school. When I began practicing law, I didn't represent the big banks, I stood up to them. I represented the "mom and pop" investors — the grandmothers whose brokers sat on their tickets while the market crashed. My job was to look at a massive, entrenched system and say,
"You’re breaking the rules, and I’m here to hold you accountable."
In 2015, my husband Chris and I fell in love with Rhinebeck and made the move. We put down roots. We now have two children Dakota age seven and Shepard age four, 3 dogs, and I own my own local real estate law practice. I care deeply about Rhinebeck. It’s our home. I want it to be better tomorrow than it is today for the sake of my kids and maybe one day their kids too.
As a mom and small business owner, and having served our community on the Rhinebeck School board and as the Town’s Special Prosecutor, I understand the many facets that make our town so wonderful, and the growing pains we need to proactively address if we want Rhinebeck to be the best possible place to live, work, and grow. As a lawyer, former football player, and someone who has always fought for what they believe in, you can be sure I am not going to beat around the bush. I will fight for you and your family the way my family fought for me, and the way I fight for mine. I will never settle for less than the people of this community deserve: transparency, affordability, justice, sustainability, prosperity and unity-- one Rhinebeck that works for everyone.
